You Choose

My husband made a great statement the other night. He said that what you consider wrong really depends on what preacher you listen to. We regularly listen to some sermons of different preachers. One preacher says that the computer and internet are wicked, and he won’t even turn on a computer. Another one preaches against social networks and texting, saying that it is just telling everyone everything about you, which is pride. I can see some truth in that. Another preaches that the TV is wrong, I agree with that too. However, the preacher that is against any use of the computer is watching sports on TV anytime I have been at his home.

It is really important who you decide to follow. We need to read and memorize the Bible for ourselves, not just blindly follow some man. Jesus commanded us to search the scriptures. John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

Wednesday night we were told that the Bible says children are a loan from the Lord and a blessing, but no verses were given. I searched for a scripture to support that idea. I love using esword to search for things like that. 1 Samuel 1:28, and 2:20 talk about Hannah loaning Samuel to the Lord, but I found nothing to support that God loans children to us. I know that children are a blessing. (Psalms 127:3) Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. Genesis 17:16, 24:60 and Deuteronomy 33:24 also supports that idea. I often come home and look up things that are questionable to see if the truth is being preached. Sadly many times it is a lie that was preached. I know he will have to answer to God for the lies he is telling, but it worries me to see all the people who just follow and don’t question his words. Here are more verses that support the idea that we should check what is preached with the Bible. (Act 17:11) These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. (I Thessalonians 5:21) Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. We need to do some checking ourselves, especially if they just say “the Bible says” and don’t give you a reference. They may make it sound good, but is it. The Bible says many times that they did that which was “right in their own eyes” (Duet 12:8, Judges 17:6 & 21:25, Prov. 12:15 & 21:2). However, it is not right in God’s eyes. (Pro 16:25) There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

It is our responsibility and right to choose what church we attend. It is wrong for the preacher to preach things like “your not right with God if you leave this church.” Show me that in the Bible! We live in a free country. We should have the freedom to choose which church to attend. There are a few basic guidelines to follow in choosing a church, but sometimes I feel like a captive in my church because of what and how things are preached. There is no “perfect” church, but there are some closer to the truth than others. There is nothing wrong with leaving a church (especially if it is teaching lies) to attend another church that is teaching the truth. (John 8:32) And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

I know I am probably going to get some comment on how we shouldn’t say anything bad about the “man of God”, so lets address that issue. The Bible says in 2Timothy 3:15-17 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. These verses show me that the man of God needs to know the scriptures. Just because a man stands behind a pulpit and speaks doesn’t make him a man of God. He must KNOW the Bible. If he is preaching lies, is he a man of God?

Thank you for listening to me. Have a great day!

Julia, You are very correct in what you said. Mark and I have been saying the same thing for years. I think so far there are few preachers we know who are humble enough to preach the truth and admit when something is just their opinion, like Burt does. Many, many times I hear fellow believers quoting a preacher rather than quoting the Bible. I've been praying for you and your family as I know this situation really frustrates you. Love you much,
